Were they afraid we were planning a coup d'etat?
I spent my first summer during Columbia Law School at a firm in Philadelphia described as one of the best places in the city for black lawyers. I believed that if there was any place where I would have an equal chance at opportunities, be treated fairly and succeed, this would be it. There were three black female summer associates out of sixty that year but any time all three of us were in an office talking, one of the partners would knock on the door to see how we were doing. It happened too often to be a coincidence that sometimes we would purposely agree to meet in so-and-so's office to test our theory that we were being monitored. Like clock work, ten minutes after we would get together a partner would stop by.
Bad Boss
I am an older woman who decided to enter the corporate world because the career I had chosen was no longer viable due to the extreme amount of physical labor it took to complete each day.
I always kept a professional attitude towards the clients of both of these attorneys. I would assist them but did not try to get to close to them.
I would have stayed with the first attorney if she had not struck me and she had paid me what I was worth.
I was with a male coworker whom I got along great with and we were both doing well. We knew we were both about to receive a $10,000 bonus for doing such a great job with a huge project.
I have a story from a previous employer in which I was treated unfairly. My boss told me she didn't like me, so no matter what, I was never good enough for her.
This is my story of how I was excluded in a position that I truly deserved at my previous employer. I am a hard-working Hispanic and try to gain everyone's respect.
I would have stayed if my boss were fair and normal.
I expected good performance and results to count at my new workplace, especially because we demanded similar principles in the firms we invested in.
I was a recent college graduated when I found this part-time job. Because I was only 22, my boss assumed that my parents were still supporting me (they weren't), and declared he only needed to pay me $12/hour with no benefits.
I was forced to always put on a happy face, even though he treated me horribly. He had very high-end clients with a lot of money who he treated like gold and as soon as they would leave, he would start blaming me for a document that had not been prepared correctly.
